Simplified Approach for Seismic Performance Assessment of Dry-Joint Masonry Arch Bridges

Abstract: The seismic performance assessment of dry-joint masonry arches is challenging because of their unique structural characteristics. Widely used assessment methods developed for frame-type structures require the use of a material-dependent section response. In contrast, the response of a dry-joint arch is not dependent on the material capacity but characterized by the sustainment of stability, primarily depending on rigid body rotation or sliding motion at the interfaces between the adjacent voussoirs. A hybrid m… Show more

“…This study was a general investigation on a one-span MAB, observing how altered deterioration mechanisms, in combination, may cause the formation of fractures in MAB and consequently offers helpful procedures. The other study was performed by Demirel and Aldemir [29]. In this study, Demirel and Aldemir [29] proposed a hybrid method using a simple micro FEM on the basis of the principles of a limit examination method for the valuation of ground motion performance of these dry-joint masonry arches.…”

“…The other study was performed by Demirel and Aldemir [29]. In this study, Demirel and Aldemir [29] proposed a hybrid method using a simple micro FEM on the basis of the principles of a limit examination method for the valuation of ground motion performance of these dry-joint masonry arches. In this study, the method was implemented for an antique dry-joint Roman MAB depending on important ground motion hazard.…”

“…The study of the structural behavior of historical masonry vaults has never been a simple task; moreover, for what concerns large Roman concrete vaults, the literature references are still insufficient. The technical literature usually deals with Roman masonry arches in bridges [1,2] and aqueducts [3], but few papers have been dedicated to the structural analysis of large Roman concrete vaults, except for the case of the Basilica of Maxentius in Rome [4].…”
