Simplified Method for the Cultivation of Spirulina for Domestic Use

Abstract: Abstract:Spirulina is a blue-green algae. There are three predominant species in India namely Spirulina platensis, Spirulina fusiformis and Spirulina maxima. All of them are profusely enriched with nutrients. As a consequence, Spirulina formulations are made available in the market for use. Unique attributes of Spirulina are autotrophic and alkallophyletic and hence the energy requirements to maintain its culture at home are almost nullified. The sunlight that we obtain at our homes is more than adequate for i… Show more

“…We control the Schottky barrier height by adjusting the work function of plasmonic nanoalloys by combining them with n-type Si substrates because alloying allows control of the electronic structure. 30,31 We adopt Ag as a solute element to Au because Ag has a smaller work function than Au 29 and is also an excellent plasmonic material.…”

“…In the case of Au, which is the most commonly used plasmonic material because of its efficient plasmon absorption and stability, combined with n-type Si, the Schottky barrier height is estimated to be approximately 0.7 eV. 29 This value is excessively high, especially when electrons are excited by NIR light with a photon energy below ∼1.0 eV because energies of the hot electrons are low compared with those of hot electrons excited by visible light, and then, it is more difficult to overcome the Schottky barrier. This is a reason for the low responsivities in the NIR region even in the previously reported Si-based plasmonic Schottky devices, which show highly efficient light absorption (>90%).…”

“…TNF-alpha is upregulated in CM, however, modulating levels of TNF-alpha through anti-TNF monoclonal antibody treatment did not increase survival in a trial with pediatric CM patients and was correlated with increased neurological sequelae (van Hensbroek et al, 1996). Pentoxifylline is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor that reduces TNF levels and proved promising in two clinical trials with adult and pediatric patients of CM based on increased survival and shorter coma duration (Di Perri et al, 1995;Das et al, 2003). However, in another trial conducted with falciparum malaria patients, treatment with pentoxifylline did not have any effect on clinical outcome and patients reported mild adverse side effects, while in one trial with a small sample size of ten pediatric CM patients, the mortality rate was unusually high in the pentoxifyllinetreated group compared to the control group (Hemmer et al, 1997;Lell et al, 2010).…”
