“…Descriptions of biodegradation of chlorinated ethenes in DNAPL source zones have focused on the main reactants, i.e., chlorinated ethenes, (fermentable) e-donor, and competing TEAPs (e.g., [4,19,36,49]). However, geochemical interactions occur also -both in response to biodegradation reactions and independently -and may play a critical role in the dechlorination process (e.g., [9]).…”

“…A number of models capable of simulating organohalide respiration kinetics have been presented in the literature that incorporate electron donor flux (i.e., fermentation) and competition (i.e., methanogenesis) (e.g. Bagley, 1998;Fennell and Gossett, 1998;Lee et al, 2004;Yu et al, 2004, Becker, 2006Huang and Becker, 2009;Becker and Seagren, 2009;Haest et al, 2010;Kouznetsova et al, 2010;5 Sabalowsky and Semprini, 2010;Huang and Becker, 2011). These models, however, are limited to the simulation of dechlorination in batch reactors or single-phase, aqueous systems.…”

“…The less complete conversion of cis-DCE in this column is likely associated with the addition of anaerobic digester sludge to this column. Lee et al (2004) showed that changes in the relative distribution of the different trophic groups (PCE and cis-DCE dehalogenators, methanogens, and different fermenter groups) in the initial inoculum can have a substantial impact on the amount of ethene produced and the fraction of H 2 used for methane production. The shorter HRT for column #3 (~ 20 days) compared to column #2 (~ 33 days) may also have contributed to less efficient conversion of cis-DCE.…”
