Simulation and Exergy Analysis of Energy Conversion Processes Using a Free and Open-Source Framework—Python-Based Object-Oriented Programming for Gas- and Steam Turbine Cycles

Abstract: State-of-the-art thermodynamic simulation of energy conversion processes requires proprietary software. This article is an attempt to refute this statement. Based on object-oriented programming a simulation and exergy analysis of a combined cycle gas turbine is carried out in a free and open-source framework. Relevant basics of a thermodynamic analysis with exergy-based methods and necessary fluid property models are explained. Thermodynamic models describe the component groups of a combined heat and power sys… Show more

“…Some authors report that the contributions made by the terms of kinetic and potential exergy are very low compared to the contributions made by the terms of physical and chemical exergy [17,[60][61][62]. Then, these terms can be ignored, so Equation (4) is reduced to:…”

“…One of the variables to be considered in the design of processes is energy that is usually consumed in large quantities in biorefineries, due to the different processing stages that are involved [17]. A tool that allows for evaluation beyond the energetic changes in a process is the exergy analysis [18][19][20].…”

“…The sustainable design approach arises, considering the described motivation as a baseline framework for generating sustainable alternatives based on computer-aided process engineering (CAPE) tools. In this sense, the development of the principles of this approach requires performing reliable estimations of physicochemical parameters in order to obtain more accurate and precise calculations considering the prediction of substance properties [2]. The above consideration is essential because many transformation processes usually handle a variety of chemical components, including solvents and biofuels such as ethanol, butanol, acetone-among others-that present very complex behaviors.…”

“…In this study, exergy analysis was used as a decision-making tool for the selection of the best alternative for the liquefaction process. Zoder et al (2018) developed a simulation and exergy analysis of energy conversion processes applied to gas and steam turbine cycles. The authors introduced a novel approach which combines process simulation, exergy analysis and object-oriented programming of a combined cycle, gas turbine system.…”
