Simulation and optimization of overlapped iteration process with multi-coupled activities based on value analysis

Abstract: The appropriate iteration process model is the basis for managing and optimizing the product development process. In this article, we attempt to introduce the concept of process effectiveness and process value. The relationship between rework probability and process effectiveness is discussed. The evolution function of process effectiveness is proposed to drive the overlapped iteration process of multi-coupled activities. The evolution process with input information update is studied, and a simulation model is… Show more

“…This proposition supports the view of some academics (Lin et al, 2009; Loch and Terwiesh, 1998) that the functional interaction utility between upstream and downstream tasks in overlapping execution can significantly speed up the completion of downstream tasks, but has no significant effect on the completion speed of upstream tasks. Another part of scholars (Yang et al, 2012; Yin et al, 2019) believes that there is no significant difference in the speed of upstream and downstream tasks. Based on the analysis of this kind of literature, this study found that the influence of frequent information communication between upstream and downstream tasks on the total execution duration was not taken into account when constructing the overlapping execution model, and the time consumed by frequent information communication in the overlapping execution mode has been demonstrated by many scholars (Yassine et al, 2013; Lin et al, 2009) as an important factor affecting the total execution duration.…”

“…This involves assessing the cost of producing or providing the component, including the cost of raw materials, labor, and other expenses. Value analysis identifies areas where costs can be reduced without compromising on quality or customer satisfaction (Yin, Gao & Ji, 2019). This may involve identifying components that can be eliminated or replaced with lower-cost alternatives, or finding ways to reduce the cost of producing or providing the component.…”

“…Compared with other compressing technologies, overlapping has characteristics of high efficiency and low cost, which has attracted increasing attention in recent years [4][5][6]. However, if applying overlapping strategy between two activities in an unappropriated time, for example, the upstream activity information is incomplete, the resources are in a shortage, or the working surface is insufficient, it is likely to increase the risk of rework [2,7,8], cost [9], and the failure of schedule plan [2,7]. Furthermore, it will reduce the potential revenue of the project entering the market.…”
