Simulation and Optimization of Urban–Rural Settlement Development from the Perspective of Production–Life–Ecology Space: A Case Study for Aksu City

Abstract: To explore the future development state of urban and rural settlements, we combined random forest algorithm (RFA) and cellular automata (CA) to simulate high precision in urban and rural settlements in Aksu city. The settlement distribution was predicted for the next 10 years, and suggestions for urban and rural settlements were proposed based on a “production–life–ecology” space. The results show the following: Transportation factors and administrative location have an important influence on the development o… Show more

“…Domestic scholars on the PLE mainly focus on three aspects: the first is the study of land use function. Heng et al 16 simulated the urban and rural residential areas in Aksu city with high precision, discussed the main tasks of PLE in different areas, and put forward the layout optimization. Someone has taken the GBA in China as an example to comprehensively evaluate the sustainable development level of the space from the perspective of PLE, using a dual environmental assessment system consisting of resource and environmental carrying capacity assessment and territorial spatial development suitability assessment.…”

“…Lastly, identifying and analyzing the "production-living-ecological" space using the land functions perspective [ 26 ]. For instance, Fu [ 27 ]and Heng et al [ 28 , 29 ]. used the "production-living-ecological" and found out that there was a poor overall spatial arrangement, in which spatial functions were not complementary and integrated.…”

“…Meanwhile, in a short period of time, RRL changes are more affected by human factors (Wang and Zhang, 2021). Specifically, in the existing studies, the research contents of rural settlements are relatively diversified, mainly focusing on the characteristics of spatiotemporal evolution and its driving factors, spatial layout optimization, functions, etc., gradually enriching the content system of rural settlement research (Heng et al, 2021;. Moreover, the research on RRL also presents different research scales, including mainly analyses of the overall evolution and driving mechanism of RRL at the macroscale, explorations of the structure, function, and spatial layout optimization of RRL, and the gradual transformation from the national and provincial macroscale to the shrinking of the county, town, and even village at the microscale Chirisa, 2021).…”
