Simulation and prototyping benefits on digital fabrication

Abstract: This paper explains how parametric methods are informed by simulation and prototyping, methods that were deployed during some series of digital fabrication workshops, their evolution and specifically with the objective of fabricating using combination of materials and CNC techniques, such as, 3d printing, laser cutting and milling machine. Teaching these workshops were the results of simulating and prototyping with students from the Biodigital Master (ESARQ UIC 2016) and a workshop done during Sigradi (Florian… Show more

“…While, the problem in the assembling part, student encountered many similar objects and wrong numbering object that's what makes students find it challenging to assemble. The workshop tries to respond to this issue using parametric design tools such as rhinoceros and grasshopper [20] [21]. The workshop contains the process of digital design using grasshoppers such as waffle structure and Voronoi structure [15], also optimization phase and preparing the fabrication file for laser cutting.…”

“…[22] Merging digital manufacturing methods have the advantage of understanding the machines' working area and the permissible range of variation in the projects dimension, besides understanding the importance of preparing geometry for different fabrication methods. [23] This requires more time to understand deeply the potential applications for prototyping. The combination of three materials with different geometrical aspects of connectivity and three manufacturing techniques add more complexity to the process.…”

(Baquero and Orciuoli 2016) "Design has a symbiotic relationship with geometry... This is the shape I have sketched, but how to I formally describe it" versus "This is the formal shape description system I am using, how do I harness and control this system to create the shape I like".…”
