Simulation-based Training Improves Physicians' Performance in Patient Care in High-stakes Clinical Setting of Cardiac Surgery

Abstract: Skills required to wean a patient from CPB can be acquired through simulation-based training. Compared with traditional interactive seminars, simulation-based training leads to improved performance in patient care by senior trainees in anesthesiology.

“…Similar improvements in anesthesia residents' nontechnical skills during anesthesia emergencies and weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass have been shown previously. 21,22 Our study does have some limitations. The sample size met our pre-study calculation but nevertheless was small, which may limit the generalizability of our findings.…”

“…Performance in cognitive and interpersonal non-technical skills was also superior in the simulation group. 115 Issenberg's group has performed a series of reviews on simulation-based education. 76,116 They identified feedback as the most important feature that promotes learning in simulation, but they noted a need for more research on how best to deliver feedback.…”

“…10,11 In cardiac surgery, simulation can be used for training purposes related to high-risk tasks, such as weaning off CPB or performing off-pump coronary bypass operations. [12][13][14][15] We have also adopted this strategy in our institution, where operating room staff practice managing typical emergency scenarios in a simulated cardiac operating room environment. After each session, the team debriefing is aimed at reviewing the team's performance and finding ways to improve communication, team-work and error management.…”
