PurposeConsiderable amount of purchases in business-to-business (B2B) markets make through the tendering process. As technology keeps driving B2B procurement, both the supplier/contractor and buyer firms have settled down in their respective roles in the electronic-tendering environment. Researchers have ignored the supplier-side e-tender-driven marketing process that might lead to substantively successful financial performance. The purpose of this study is to improve the performance of an e-tender-driven marketing process of an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) incorporating the stakeholder's inputs.Design/methodology/approachDiscrete event simulation modelling (DESM) has been used as a methodology to model, analyse and improve the process with the involvement of stakeholders at every stage of the study. Different scenarios are analysed to identify the near-optimal scenario based on agreed-upon key performance indicators.FindingsScenario that incorporated man-power sharing and eliminating avoidable activities gives the near-optimal solution for implementation.Research limitations/implicationsThis study highlights that better insights can be gained by adopting the process-oriented view of the marketing–operations interface. Embracing a stakeholder-based consultative approach gives research a more practical outlook and reduces the gap between theory and practice. Suggestions for further research are provided.Practical implicationsB2B organizations, where lines between marketing and operations are blurred, can improve their marketing processes by implementing operations research tools.Originality/valueThis study provides an attempt to improve the performance of a supplier-side e-tender-driven marketing process of an OEM using the DESM methodology incorporating stakeholder's inputs.

The aim of this paper is to study the influence of demography on the demand for healthcare services. The research is carried on in Wrocław Region (WR), Poland. We apply the system dynamic method and aging chain approach to simulate the number of individuals belonging to the respective age-gender cohorts. We consider such demographic descriptive parameters as birth and death rates, life expectancy and migration factors. Then, the discrete event simulation model is used to predict the annual demand for emergency hospital care, as registered at the hospitals located in the WR. The historical data on hospital admissions are drawn from National Health Fund regional branch. The input parameters describing the population are calculated based on historical and forecasted rates of primary demographic parameters, retrieved from various databases and official projections published by the Polish Central Statistical Office (CSO). The simulation predicts that between 2011 and 2020 the WR population will grow by 4.5% and the population aged 60+ will increase by 16.2%. Over the same period the number of arriving patients, compared to 2011, will be higher by 1.52%. Furthermore, the noticeable differences will be observed in the number of arrivals between particular hospitals.

Concerns about production efficiency, quality and affordability in the residential construction indicate there may be benefits in adopting alternative production control strategies to those traditionally used. Reducing adverse effects of exogenous variability in demand and endogenous variability in process are the ultimate goals of production control strategies. For residential construction this means controlling the number of houses under construction and controlling the start rate of new house constructions. The aim of this investigation is to compare and contrast the outcomes of these two production management strategies. Production data of two volume house builders in Victoria and Queensland, Australia, were collected. Tangible performance metrics of builders were analyzed and compared using principles of the queuing theory. Then numerous simulation experiments were designed and run in order to analyze different what-if scenarios in the building environment. A special purpose simulation template was developed in order to define a cap for production and limit the number of houses under construction based on actual demand and available capacity. The findings reveal that rate-driven construction outperforms due-date-driven construction in terms of three studied performance measures. This investigation adopts an original and quantitative approach towards three production aspects of efficiency, supervision and controllability. Therefore it contributes to the body-of-knowledge by developing an in-depth insight into superior performance of the rate-driven control strategy with the Page 1 of 28 intention of improving production output and long term sustainability of residential and other sub-sectors of the construction industry.
