The circular economy is gaining more space amongst academia and industry as a path toward sustainable development. The Product Service System (PSS) is pointed as a business model with a high potential of achieving circular economy, specially through efficient consumption and production. Even though literature on PSS is somewhat extensive and has been growing over the years, PSS is still troublesome to adopt, due to a lack of organization of the existing knowledge. This research seeks to gather and organize PSS development approaches (tools, methods and processes) presented in the literature, according to the PSS lifecycle. A bibliographical analysis was conducted, gathering researches in which PSS development approaches were mentioned. The approaches were later categorized, and their applications were analyzed. MePSS, PSS Board, Service Blueprint, and Business Canvas Model are some of the main approaches studied. Analysis showed research gaps concerning practical knowledge on the PSS field and approaches that comprehend the whole PSS lifecycle, completing the circularity of the productservice offer. Future research could aim at fulfilling those gaps, applying conceptual elements of Product-Service Systems and supporting the transaction toward a more circular economy.

International audienceIndustry servitisation, i.e. the manufacturing industry transition towards the integration of services, provides for strong opportunities of new business model development and implementation. However, managing the industrial transformation to such business models means decision-makers are confronted with high decisional complexity. Such dramatic changes affect most enterprise performance drivers, and the interactions of the multiple business and industrial factors influencing the overall company performance make it very difficult for managers to specify consistent and efficient industrial configurations for their business processes. This context explains a concrete need for developing servitisation-dedicated decision support systems (DSS). The objective of the decision aid developed in this paper is to provide operational support which integrates the specific business and industrial features of so-called ‘product–service systems’ in order to study the interactions of different types of performance factors, notably market-oriented versus industrial-oriented factors. These developments are applied to a French Small and Medium Enterprise (SME). The key added values of the paper are (1) to specify a modelling and simulation approach associated to a generic simulator adaptable to various industrial contexts, then (2) to illustrate the concrete decision support provided in a case study of an SME in the business of remanufacturing electrical equipment. Product-service systems (PSS) can improve sustainability in terms of responsibility of providers and intensified customer-provider relationships. Therefore, a PSS approach has been applied on the distribution of solar home systems in rural areas of emerging countries to improve quality and increase confidence in this technology. However, many innovative projects fail at the piloting stage because of insufficient validation before implementation. Validation methods for PSS like an integrated gap model (e.g. identification of gaps between deliverables and customers expectations) or interdisciplinary design reviews show its limits on the interdependences between product and service development. A new approach to test PSS involves agent-based simulation models and is presented within this paper. Among system dynamics and discrete event simulation, an agent-based simulation is able to work with less quantitative data and a more detailed view on individual entities than the alternative approaches. Thus, it is possible to create more realistic simulation models to validate especially resource planning of a PSS. Agent-based simulation is used within the MEVIS (Micro Energy Supply Information System) project to model a network of solar home systems which are controlled by remote monitoring in order to improve service processes, e. g. maintenance and repair operations. The pilot test should be carried out efficiently by the preceding virtual validation in the form of a simulation, which is built in NetLogo, a tool that enables modeling of a multi-agent environment. Within this environment, communicating technical artifacts as well as different groups of actors are mapped as agents. As a result, diagrams of relevant parameters like the overall repair costs or the estimated customer's satisfaction are displayed and the resource planning is visually supported. This helps to push a PSS into a new market, where you have to deal with existing resources that must be used efficiently. The contributions in this paper provide the conception and an exemplary presentation of the simulation run.
