Simulation of fracture propagation in fibre-reinforced concrete using FDEM: an application to tunnel linings

Abstract: The application of the combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM) to simulate fracture propagation in fibre-reinforcedconcrete (FRC)-lined tunnels has been investigated. This constitutes the first attempt of using FDEM for the simulation of fracture in FRC structures. The mathematical implementations of the new FDEM joint-element constitutive model are first introduced, and the numerical model is then validated comparing the results for plain and FRC beams with three-point bending experimental data. The co… Show more

“…In 2020, a special issue titled "combined finite discrete element method and virtual experimentation" were published in the Journal of Computational Particle Mechanics. The issue presented the fundamental developments (Gao and Feng, 2020;Lei et al, 2020;Yan et al, 2020;Knight et al, 2020;Joulin et al, 2020), simulation technologies (Mohammadnejad et al, 2020;Munjiza et al, 2020a;Wang et al, 2020) and applications (Okubo et al, 2020;Boyce et al, 2020;Munjiza et al, 2020b;Chau et al, 2020;Zhang et al, 2020;Farsi et al, 2020) of the method. It can be seen that parallel accelerated computing, multi-field coupling, multi-field applications, as well as the fundamental theory development are the trend of the method.…”

“…It can simulate the behavioral process of materials from continuous deformation to discontinuous deformation. In the field of civil engineering, this method has been applied to analyze the deformation of rocks surrounding highway construction and the development of cracks in concrete structures and to perform simulation tests of the mass strength of various rock and soil types [24][25][26][27], all of which demonstrated good computational and simulation performances.…”

“…e modelled results indicates that the proposed method is useful for the fracture mechanics analysis and design of the FGMs structures. Farsi et al used the FDEM method to simulate fracture propagation in fibrereinforced-concrete-(FRC-) lined tunnels [31]. e modelled results show the capabilities of FDEM method for better understanding of the fracture mechanics and crack propagation in FRC tunnels.…”
