Simulation of Molecular Distillation Process for Lactic Acid

Abstract: Abstract:In this work, a procedure to simulate the MD (molecular distillation) process for lactic acid purification was developed. The simulation was carried out with the aid of the Aspen Plus ® Process Simulator. Flash vessel was used to represent the MD process since the software does not present this unit operation. The simulation results with efficiency factors were in agreement with previously reported experimental data.

“…The NRTL-HOC (Non-Random Two Liquids with Hayden O'Connell correlation) model was used for the vapour-liquid equilibrium (VLE) in all cases. This model was used in a number of studies simulating the VLE of SCOAs, e.g., [19,20].…”

“…Lactic acid is the most important hydrocarboxylic acid (Wang et al 2016a), and it has a wide variety of applications such as in pharmaceutical products, cosmetics, food industry, package industry, chemistry, and medical areas (Komesu et al 2014a). However, the versatility of applications can only be fully exploited if the compound has a cost-effective production (Komesu et al 2016). The greatest challenge in its production is to obtain high purity lactic acid, which is related to downstream processes (Pal et al 2009).…”
