Simulation of Polymer Injection under Fracturing Conditions - A Field Pilot in the Matzen Field, Austria

Abstract: Polymer flooding leads to enhanced oil recovery by accelerating oil production and improving sweep efficiency. However, owing to the higher viscosity, injectivity of polymer solutions is of some concern and is important to understand to predict incremental oil recoveries. Achieving high polymer injection rates is required to increase oil production rates. In the field test performed in the Matzen field (Austria), polyacrylamide polymers have been injected for the past two years. Core flood experiments with thes… Show more

“…Produced water will always contain residual oil and TSS and these levels need to be very low to avoid any injectivity decline. For injection under fractured conditions produced water can be and has been used (Al-shuaili et al, 2012;Zechner et al, 2014). However, the fracture propagation rate will need to be controlled and appropriate water quality is still required to avoid fast propagation of the fracture and maintaining integrity by safeguarding the cap rock pressure.…”

“…However, as polymer injection occurred under fracturing conditions (Clemens et al 2013), the induced fractures are growing faster for poorer water quality (Suri et al 2011, Zechner et al 2014 due to more extensive plugging of the fracture interfaces by the "sludge". As growing fractures might impact sweep efficiency if they are extensive (e.g.…”

“…Zechner et al 2014 investigated induced fracture growth during water and polymer injection in the 8 TH reservoir. They showed that to (1) achieve economical polymer injection rates, (2) avoid fracturing through the overburden shale and (3) limit degradation of the polymer solution a solid definition of the operational constraints with respect to injection pressure and rates as well as polymer concentration is required.…”

“…В зависи-мости от марки ПАА, минерализации во-ды и содержания сопутствующих компо-нентов вязкость раствора полимера при одной и той же концентрации ПАА может существенно различаться. Наиболее эф-фективное вытеснение нефти агентом в пласте происходит при близких значениях их вязкостей [13][14][15]. При увеличении от-ношения вязкости вытесняющего агента к вязкости пластовой нефти до пяти эффек-тивность вытеснения продолжает увели-чиваться [16].…”
