Simulation of software maintenance process, with and without a work‐in‐process limit

Abstract: SUMMARYA software maintenance process is important for reducing maintenance effort and for improving software quality. In recent years, the Lean-Kanban approach has been widely applied in software practice including software maintenance. This approach minimizes Work-in-Progress (WIP), which is the number of items that are worked on by the team at any given time, thus improving the maintenance process. In this paper, we describe our simulation studies, which show that the Lean-Kanban approach can indeed help re… Show more

“…To date, research has not sufficiently studied or addressed these characteristics (e.g. Cocco et al, 2011;Concas et al, 2013). Secondly, the effectiveness of Kanban has largely been supported by anecdotal evidence and largely by consultancy organisations whose primary business is based on these purported benefits (i.e.…”

“…However, there are other reports, such as (Concas et al 2013), where there is not much information on the simulation model and its validity, as well as the experimental design, but it also presents a good analysis of the results obtained. Indeed, for both reports, there is no explicit mention to the whole methodology adopted.…”

“…Authors usually refer to them as limitations and unverified assumptions, without discussing their consequences. Al-Emran et al (2010) and Concas et al (2013) present discussions according to the types of threats proposed in (Cook and Campbell 1979).…”

“…The work presented in this article emerges from the various di culties regarding the use of simulation models to reproduce real case studies from China and India (Concas et al, 2013;Anderson et al, 2012Anderson et al, , 2011Lunesu, 2013). This article thus contributes to the body of knowledge by presenting a simulationbased approach that can help reflecting on past projects and selecting and evaluating process alternatives to improve the GSE development approach.…”
