Simulation of stress and strain analysis on a delimbing knife with replaceable cutting edge

Abstract: This study focused on stress and strain analysis of the cutting force of a branch knife with a replaceable cutting edge. The replaceable edge forms part of the delimbing head, which is applied to the arms of a mechanical harvester working in forestry. Basic parameters of the knife and head of the harvester with the basic calculations necessary to determine the number of knives based on input parameters, such as wood diameter, woody plants, and determination of the cutting force acting on the cutting knife, wer… Show more

“…Using the finite element method (FEM), the analysis was carried out in Creo simulate. The authors (Mikleš 2012;Hatton et al 2017;Melicherčík et al 2020) have employed this method in their contributions as well.…”

“…Using the size and direction of the cutting forces together with the boundary conditions, it was possible to implement a simulation, in the evaluation of which the program includes the action of the gravitational force, as well as the size of the centrifugal force for the specified cutting conditions. The results give an approximate idea of how big stresses can act on individual parts of the saw blade from the point of view of theory and practice [13][14][15][16].…”

“…The analysis was performed in Solidworks professional 2019 (Profesinal 2019, Dassault Systèmes, Vélizy-Villacoublay, France) simulations using the finite element method (FEM). This method was also used by the authors in their previous contributions (Mikleš 2012;Hiesl et al 2015;Hatton et al 2017;Mederski et al 2016Mederski et al , 2018Melicherčík et al 2020). The larger diameter hole is firmly welded to the entire arm, and therefore a wedge-type bond, and thus a stationary bearing, was used.…”

“…The individual parameters set during the stress analysis were set according to the technical parameters of the material, as well as the Young's module and the post number. The basic parameters were used in the same way as in the simulations published by other authors (Mederski et al 2018;Melicherčík et al 2020).…”
