Simulation of the structural behavior of a Francis runner in Deep Part Load Operation

Abstract: With the need for flexible operation, Francis runners are exposed to various operating conditions beyond the traditional operating range. These machines have to be designed for long time Part Load Operation in order to meet hydraulic and structural requirements. Deep Part Load Operation (DPL) mainly consists of stochastic loads on the blades. Whereas calculation methods for the dynamic stress at full load operation are well established, calculation of the dynamics during low load operation are in the focus of … Show more

“…In addition, PIV measurements were conducted for a high cavitation number that were used for validation of the velocity profiles in the draft tube cone. More detailed information on the experimental setup is available in [5] and [9]. In this study, simulation results at pressure sensor locations in the runner are compared with measurement data.…”

“…The goal of this study is to answer the question how mesh refinement and the occurrence of cavitation affect the pressure fluctuations in the runner of a Francis turbine. This is an important task as CFD results are used as input for structural mechanical investigations to predict the lifetime of turbines [8,9].…”

“…In the works of [3,4], the structural behaviour of Francis model runners was investigated. Herein, a combination of numerical and experimental techniques was applied.…”

“…Therefore, special care must be taken of understanding the flow phenomena and predicting the structural vibrations. In [3][4][5], the focus was laid on the structural and flow behaviour of Francis runners in deep partial load. Herein, both numerical and experimental techniques are applied.…”
