Simulation of Ti-6Al-4V cruciform welded joints subjected to fatigue load using XFEM

Abstract: The stress distribution of cruciform shape welded joints is analyzed by finite element codes ABAQUS. Welded joints with various weld shapes and sizes are investigated to estimate the fatigue life of different joints. The fatigue behavior is evaluated under constant amplitude loading (R=0.1). The aim of this work is fatigue behavior evaluation of fillet welded cruciform joint for different weld geometry. The weld geometry are considered: concave, convex and flat weld shape of different weld sizes.  The stress i… Show more

“…It should be noted that the fracture patterns depend highly on the mesh size according to the literature [25,26]. Then, it is necessary to refine the mesh size in order to improve the breakthrough initiation points and to introduce the XFEM method in order to correctly predict the rupture propagation paths after initiation [27]. The proposed micromechanical model is limited only to estimating the fracture initiation points.…”

“…A Zwick universal testing machine is used at CAN company to perform the different tests, imposing different stress or force ratios to reproduce the different loading paths of the FLD, as represented in Figure 5. For applying the load on flat plates or cruciform specimen in two different directions, this type of machine is required [36]. The type of load is applied in compression or tension-type.…”

“…They conducted their experimental tests on specimens with residual stresses, which were induced by cold expansion. Vempati et al [8] studied the fatigue life of Ti-6Al-4V cruciform welded joints using XFEM. They investigated welded joints with various weld shapes and sizes to estimate the fatigue life of joints.…”
