Simulation studies of hadron energy resolution as a function of iron plate thickness at INO-ICAL

Abstract: We report on a detailed simulation study of the hadron energy resolution as a function of the thickness of the absorber plates for the proposed Iron Calorimeter (ICAL) detector at the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO). We compare the hadron resolutions obtained with absorber thicknesses in the range 1.5-8 cm for neutrino interactions in the energy range 2-15 GeV, which is relevant to hadron production in atmospheric neutrino interactions. We find that at lower energies, the thickness dependence of energy … Show more

“…The NUANCE [4] simulation suggests that the fraction of the different types of hadrons produced in the detector is π + : π − : π 0 :: 0.38 : 0.25 : 0.34, with the remaining 3% contribution coming mainly from kaons [10]. While the response of the detector to π + and π − is almost identical as seen earlier, its response to the electromagnetic part of the hadron shower that originates from π 0 is different.…”

“…(1) is for the ideal case when the detector has perfect resolutions and 100% efficiencies. In this analysis, realistic resolutions and efficiencies obtained from GEANT-4-based simulation studies of ICAL [25][26][27][28][29] have been incorporated; this not only reduces the overall events due to the reconstruction efficiency factor but also smears out the final state (or observed) muon energy and direction and that of the hadron energy as well.…”

“…The detailed simulation studies of the response of ICAL to hadrons have been presented in Refs. [28,29]. Hadron hits are identified and calibrated to reconstruct the energy of hadrons in neutrino-induced interactions in ICAL.…”
