Simulations of NOx Emissions from Low Emissions Discrete Jet Injector Combustor Tests

Abstract: An experimental and computational study was conducted to evaluate the performance and emissions characteristics of a candidate Lean Direct Injection (LDI) combustor configuration with a mix of simplex and airblast injectors. The National Combustion Code (NCC) was used to predict the experimentally measured EINOx emissions for test conditions representing low power, medium power, and high-power engine cycle conditions. Of the six cases modeled with the NCC using a reduced-kinetics finite-rate mechanism and lagr… Show more

“…NCC has been used to analyse both single [146,147] and multiple injector LDI configurations [149,148]. Comprehensive CFD studies [96][97][98] were performed to evaluate combustion characteristics of multi-Lean Direct Injection combustion systems (LDI-1) so as to prepare a tool to provide guidance for defining and refining the next-generation LDI-2 and LDI-3. Non-reacting computations were performed to enable extensive comparison of axialvelocity, radial-velocity, tangential-velocity, and turbulent kinetic-energy with experimental data [92].…”

“…The CFD analysis to support the ERA programs LDI-2 injector designs used many of the best-practices developed for the NCC using single-element and nine-element LDI-1 designs [Ajmani 2013] 11 . Details of the CFD efforts using NASA's NCC code for the ERA program's LDI-2 configurations were reported by [Ajmani 2014a] 12 (Woodward FST's LDI-2) and [Ajmani 2014b] 13 (Goodrich's multipoint LDI).…”
