Simultaneous Detection of Heavy Metals by Anodic Stripping Voltammetry Using Carbon Nanotube Thread

Abstract: Carbon nanotube (CNT) threads are a type of CNT arrays that consist of super long CNTs. CNT threads inherit the advantages of CNTs, while avoiding the potential toxicity caused by individual CNTs. Electrodes based on CNT threads were fabricated and used for simultaneous detection of trace levels of Cu2+, Pb2+ Cd2+ and Zn2+ by anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). The detection limits are 0.27 nM, 1.5 nM, 1.9 nM and 1.4 nM for Cu2+, Pb2+, Cd2+ and Zn2+, respectively, in 0.1 M acetate buffer pH 4.5. The CNT thread… Show more

“…Excessive consumption of some heavy metals, such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu), is harmful to human beings. For example, Pb is highly toxic and can cause neurological malfunction in fetus [1], accumulation of Cd may cause renal dysfunction [2], and excessive and prolonged consumption of Cu may affect metabolic process [3]. Hence, a search for a fast, sensitive and simple analytical method for the detection of these harmful pollutants in water is crucial before the pollutants reach consumers.…”

“…Among the current developed electrochemical approaches, anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) have been widely accepted as one of the most simple and efficient technique, since it can be operated easily and can analyze several heavy metal ions simultaneously [12][13]. The ASV is usually accomplished by two steps: the preconcentration step and the stripping step.…”

“…Nanomaterials have shown signi¯cant advantages in many applications due to their unique physical, chemical and biological properties. [24][25][26][27][28][29][30] Herein, an e±cient and environmentally friendly nanosenor was developed to simultaneously detect total iron (Fe 2þ and Fe 3þ ) in aqueous solution using water-soluble°u orescent carbon nanoparticles (FCNs). Our results show that the°uorescence of carbon nanoparticles is gradually quenched with increasing concentration of Fe 3þ or Fe 2þ ions, and the solution generates a distinguishable color change from pale yellow to red-brown as iron concentration reaches 40 M. Furthermore, both Fe 3þ and Fe 2þ have the same°u orescence quenching e±ciency, which reveals that this nanosensor can be used to simultaneously detect total iron contents in water.…”
