Simultaneous Determination of Essential Oil Components and Fatty Acids in Fennel using Gas Chromatography with a Polar Capillary Column

Abstract: Cultivated and wild growing samples of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill., Apiaceae) from R. Macedonia were studied for their volatiles and fatty acid composition. The main essential oil components isolated via hydrodistillation were: trans-anethole (>80%), estragole (<6%), limonene (<6%), anisaldehyde (<1%) and 0.5 % fenchone. An alternative method for characterization of both the non-polar volatile and non volatile fractions was developed using n-hexane and dichloromethane (3:1, v/v) in a Soxhlet extraction fo… Show more

“…The chemical composition is quite similar to the ones reported for sweet fennel fruit from Turkey [40,41] and Greece [33]. In general, the transanethole content in sweet fennel is from 80 to 90 % [14,18,20,33,[40][41][42] and sometimes it can be up to 95% [14,43,44]. According to the results of GC-FID analyses ( Table 2), along with the abovementioned decrease in the essential oil content, there is a gradual change in the chemical composition as the sweet fennel fruits age.…”

“…Our goal was to make an assessment of the applicability of SHS-GC-FID analysis of fennel fruit volatile components where several grams of plant material are available and compare the results with the standard method of hydrodistillation and GC analysis of the essential oil. So, the isolated essential oil was primarily analyzed on a 100 m SP2560 capillary column (GC-FID) by a previously developed method [20] and the results are given in Table 2. To obtain complementary data concerning chemical composition of volatile components it is advisable to perform the analysis on a column with different polarity.…”

“…criteria. These results are in agreement with previous studies of cultivated fennel in Macedonia, which is characterized by high content (above 80 %) of trans-anethole and very low content of fenchone (less than 1 %) [39][40][41]. The chemical composition is quite similar to the data reported for sweet fennel fruit from Turkey [42,43] and Greece [44].…”

“…HPLC methods have also been reported in the estimation of TAL in rat plasma, human plasma and human urine [26][27][28]. Various GC methods with different detectors were also utilized in the estimation of TAL in different plant-based products [29][30][31][32][33][34]. The nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy method has also been used for the quantitative analysis of TAL in fennel and anise seed essential oils [32].…”
