Simultaneous Determination of Nitrite and Nitrate in Potato and Water Samples Using Negative Electrospray Ionization Ion Mobility Spectrometry

Abstract: Nowadays, nitrite and nitrate ions are analyzed in biological samples using laborious and expensive methods; such as HPLC, CE, MS-MS. In this work, the simultaneous analysis of nitrite and nitrate ions was conducted by electrospray ionization-ion mobility spectrometry (ESI-IMS), without using any complicated or laborious derivitization step. Ion mobility spectrometry with low cost, inexpensive maintenance and very fast analysis makes an attractive technique for the simultaneous determination of these ions in f… Show more

“…The identity of each peak was confirmed by cross referencing the K 0 values measured in the current study to the K 0 values obtained in nitrogen as the drift gas by other researchers . The peak patterns can be used as anion identification since they were unique and reproducible for each anion . However, mass identification of the peaks is necessary to identify these anions.…”

“…The sample molecules need to be ionized, usually through techniques involving radioactive sources, 21 corona discharge, 22 and electrospray ionization source. 23,24 The originated ions are separated under the influence of an electric field and drift gas flow, in the opposite direction of ions migration. When ions arrive at the collector, positioned at the end of the drift tube, the corresponding ion peak(s) appear in the ion mobility spectrum.…”
