“…HONO (g) could also be released from the surface during the morning in response to chemical and physical changes occurring at the same time as the boundary layer breakup (e.g., evaporation of dew, release from soil pore water, and/or bacterial processes) [He et al, 2006;Maljanen et al, 2013;Oswald et al, 2013;Rubio et al, 2008;Su et al, 2011]. Overall, the agreement between these two instruments is comparable to other HONO (g) measurement intercomparisons between a new technique and an established sampling method Pinto et al, 2014;Ren et al, 2010;Stutz et al, 2010]. Therefore, the HONO (g) measurements made by the AIM-IC in Bakersfield during CalNex-SJV are considered reliable.…”

“…Excellent agreement between LOPAP and LP-DOAS has been obtained (slope=0.987±0.015; r 2 =0.87) . The results of the comparison generally showed consistent agreement, although there were occasionally significant differences that could be attributed to either an NO 2 artefact of the DOAS instrument or possible interferences in the chemical methods (Heland et al 2001;Kleffmann et al 2006;Stutz et al 2010). CIMS is a powerful and sensitive technique in measuring many trace gases in the atmosphere.…”

“…Time resolution, sensitivity, the absence of any artefact and the capability to perform measurements under diverse environmental conditions are paramount of importance in the performance of analytical instruments. Given that the increasing atmospheric interest in measuring HONO, intercomparison studies of instruments have been conducted in previous field measurements Stutz et al 2010;Levy et al 2014;Pinto et al 2014). Excellent agreement between LOPAP and LP-DOAS has been obtained (slope=0.987±0.015; r 2 =0.87) .…”

“…Existing detection methods can be categorized as wet chemistry, mass spectrometry, and optical spectroscopy. The wet chemical detection methods are sensitive but generally rely on conversion of HONO to nitrite ion (NO − 2 ) (Appel et al, 1990;Dibb et al, 2002;Kleffmann et al, 2006) and may be susceptible to chemical interferences and sampling artifacts (Stutz et al, 2010). Recently, chemical ionization mass spectrometry with acetate ion (Roberts et al, 2010) or iodide ion chemistry has been successfully used for sensitive HONO detection.…”
