Simultaneous Graphite Exfoliation and N Doping in Supercritical Ammonia

Abstract: We report the exfoliation of graphite and simultaneous N doping of graphene by two methods: supercritical ammonia treatment and liquid-phase exfoliation with NHOH. While the supercritical ammonia allowed N doping at a level of 6.4 atom % in 2 h, the liquid-phase exfoliation with NHOH allowed N doping at a level of 2.7 atom % in 6 h. The N doped graphene obtained via the supercritical ammonia route had few layers (<5) and showed large lateral flake size (∼8 μm) and low defect density (I/I < 0.6) in spite of the… Show more

“…It has been used for exfoliating 2D crystals [18] because it is cheap, abundant, nontoxic, nonflammable, recyclable, and environmentally friendly. [37] A product yield of ≈3 wt% was reported, and about 40% of exfoliated sheets had less than five layers upon treatment (200 °C, 15 MPa) for 1 h. Lateral dimensions ranged from 5 to 8 µm, in contrast to less than 3 µm reported in most liquid-phase exfoliation methods. However, scCO 2 alone usually produces thick sheets (more than ten layers), though such thicknesses still offer advantageous applications.…”

“…Using urea, [169] dimethylglyoxime, [170] or glycine [171] as a dopant, similar doping results were obtained in scH 2 O (400 °C). [37] The resulting N configurations were dominated with pyrrolic N (45.9%) followed by graphitic N in the basal plane (32.5%) and also at the edge (10.1%), and pyridinic N (11.5%). [138] Cyclotrimerization of cyano groups in acetonitrile was inferred to form a 1,3,5-triazine ring, facilitating the formation of CN bond primarily at the edges of graphene at high temperature and pressure.…”
