Simultaneous occurrence of chronic myeloid leukemia and chronic lymphocytic leukemia: Report of an unusual case

Abstract: The coexistence of chronic myeloid leukaemia(CML) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia(CLL) has been reported occasionally in literature, with only seven cases of simultaneous occurrence of these two diseases. We present here a case of 57 yr male patient where a complete blood count and differential done using volume conductivity scatter (VCS) technology suggested a diagnosis of CML with CLL. It was further confirmed by immunophneotyping and cytogenetic analysis. The patient was started on tyrosine kinase inhibito… Show more

“…The combination of CML and CLL in a single patient is rare. Although occasionally diagnosed simultaneously, instances of CML preceded by CLL are more common, 2–7 as demonstrated in the present series. The time between these diagnoses ranges from 2 to 96 months.…”

“…39 A handful of concurrent CML and CLL cases have been reported in the literature spanning 30 years that have successfully been comanaged. [40][41][42][43][44] Targeted therapies have also been used successfully in a few cases, strengthening the argument that combination therapies can be safely and effectively administered in these rare patients. 45,46 The most compelling component of this case report is that it highlights the safety and efficacy of concomitant venetoclax and imatinib.…”

“…Contrastingly, Ph + CML and CLL/SLL or MBL in the same patient is a very rare condition and even rarer is their simultaneous diagnosis. When sequentially diagnosed, these mature BL neoplasms more often precede CML 3, 4. Leukemogenic effects of chemotherapy drugs used to treat CLL as well as immunodeficiency associated to CLL have been suggested as plausible causes for the development of CML following CLL diagnosis 6 .…”

“…To date, only a few dozens of cases of simultaneous CML and CLL have been reported and only in a minority of patients, they are diagnosed concomitantly 3 . In addition, only one case of simultaneous CML and MBL has been reported, where CML followed MBL 4 …”
