Simultaneous surgery in patients with both cardiac and noncardiac diseases

Abstract: BackgroundTo investigate the possibility and feasibility of simultaneous cardiac and noncardiac surgery.MethodsFrom August 2000 to March 2015, 64 patients suffering from cardiac and noncardiac diseases have been treated by simultaneous surgeries.ResultsTwo patients died after operations in hospital; thus, the hospital mortality rate was 3.1%. One patient with coronary heart disease, acute myocardial infarction, and a recurrence of bladder cancer accepted emergency simultaneous coronary artery bypass grafting (… Show more

“…Thoracic surgeons have been challenged to choose simultaneous surgery or a two-stage approach. 10 Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and CABG are two common cardiac revascularization treatments. The early complications of surgical treatment involving PCI are associated with a significant risk of major intraoperative cardiac ischemia at 6 weeks to 3 months after the stenting.…”

“…However, in China which has a large population, there are few reports of combined esophagectomy and off-pump CABG. By extensively reviewing relevant literature [ 12 , 16 ], we present the largest single-center report in China so far. The simultaneous surgeries may prolong the anesthesia time and surgical time and increase the postoperative heparinization-related bleeding risks.…”

“…However, the presence of CHD increases the surgical morbidity of patients with lung cancer [ 7 ]. This fact creates a clinical dilemma for surgeons on how to decide on the best treatment for with combined early lung cancer and severe CHD, but because surgical techniques have continued to improve, it is now possible to conduct combined coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery and lobectomy for lung cancer in a single combined surgical procedure [ 8 , 9 ].…”
