Single-Chamber SOFCs Using Dimethyl Ether and Ethanol

Abstract: An anode-supported single-chamber solid oxide fuel cell ͑SC-SOFC͒, consisting of a Ce 0.9 Gd 0.1 O 1.9 electrolyte, a Ni-Ce 0.8 Sm 0.2 O 1.8 ͑SDC͒ cermet anode, and a Sm 0.5 Sr 0.5 CoO 3 cathode, was operated in a mixture feed of dimethyl ether ͑DME͒, ethanol or butane, and air at a furnace temperature of 300°C. This SC-SOFC showed comparatively poor performance for DME and ethanol fuels when compared to the performance for butane fuel, resulting from the relatively small difference in catalytic activity for D… Show more

“…However, operation with other fuels such as propane [52][53][54], higher hydrocarbons [52,55] or even liquid fuels [56] has also been reported. The gas mixture is characterized by the fuel-to-oxygen ratio, R mix .…”

“…Hibino et al [56] also were the first group to investigate the use of alternative, liquid fuels such as dimethyl ether and ethanol. Using the heating effect generated by the fuel oxidation reactions, operation became possible at temperatures as low as 300 °C.…”

“…This problem can be overcome either by adding water, which will help reforming the ethanol into H 2 , CO and CH 4 that in turn can be directly converted in the SOFC or by developing new anode materials, inactive towards C-deposition [4][5][6][7][8][9][10].…”

“…Similar to conventional dual-chamber SOFCs, GDC-and SDC-based electrolytes are being investigated for intermediate-and low-temperature operation [44,45]. Compared with YSZ, cells with a SDC electrolyte showed higher current densities and lower ohmic resistance [44].…”
