Single-Longitudinal-Mode Dual Wavelength-Switchable Fiber Laser Based on Superposed Fiber Bragg Gratings

Abstract: In this work, a simple switchable dual-wavelength short-cavity fiber laser operating in a single-longitudinal-mode regime at room temperature and based on superposed fiber Bragg gratings is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Only by introducing stress into one of the overwritten FBGs, single-or dual-wavelength laser oscillations can be attained. Either single-or multimode operation of the laser can be easily achieved. Single-longitudinal-mode emission has been verified in two different ways: the first c… Show more

“…Fibre gratings are ideal components to select lasing wavelength for fibre laser due to the full compatibility with fibre, many fibre gratings based schemes for multiwavelength fibre laser have been proposed, such as using long period grating (LPG) or large angle tilted fibre grating as polarization dependent loss element [11,12], turning the central wavelengths of the gratings to match or mismatch the selected lasing wavelengths [13,14], in fibre Lyot filter based on 45° tilted fibre Bragg gratings(FBGs) [15], cascaded long period gratings [16,17], fibre gratings in Sagnac loop mirrors [18,19], and use of gratings in special fibres [20][21][22].…”

“…However, the EDF ring lasers with stable single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) operation will be hard to accomplish principally because of the long fiber cavity and the dense multi-longitudinal-mode (MLM) oscillation induced by the homogenous broadening effect of EDF [6], [7]. To ensure and reach the SLM action in the EDF ring fiber laser with advantageous output performance, numerous methods have been operated in the fiber ring cavity, such as using the Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) scheme [8], saturable absorber (SA) based filter [9], [10], Rayleigh backscattering (RB) injection [11], compound fiber ring configuration [12], [13], and narrower optical filter [14], [15].
