Single point incremental forming has shown immense potential in the manufacture of prototypes. The sheet metal deformation in this technique is carried out by a small hemispherical or flat tool that moves from the sheet periphery to the sheet center while also pushing the sheet down. Simulations of single point incremental forming can be a tedious task since the area required to be formed is large and the two sheet contact area is fairly small. The effect of tool however, affects the entire geometry by causing deflections and radial strains. Hence, it becomes essential to understand the effect of certain parameters that influence the simulation results for this forming process. The paper aims to study factors influencing the simulation of single point incremental forming process. It gives a description of techniques employed to simulate non-linear behavior of sheet metal forming along with the implicit and explicit methodology. Information on the selection of element type including Reduced Enhanced Solid-Shell element is presented. Techniques employed to avoid locking are also discussed. ARTICLE HISTORY

This paper deals with an experimental and numerical study focused on the SPIF process of a dome part manufactured by means of a 2-axis NC lathe machine. The main objective is to enhance the understanding of a set of parameters in connection with ISF operations applied to this type of machine unusually used in incremental forming processes, despite the high degree of development of NC lathe machines. Nowadays 4 and 5 axis lathe centers are widely used in industrial applications. This makes NC lathe machines useful in SPIF process especially in the case of axisymmetric parts. The present results, covering thinning, appearance of cracks, surface quality and FLD diagram; prove the efficiency of NC turning machines to perform SPIF application of parts commonly manufactured by a 3-axis NC milling machine.

The last decade has seen considerable interest in flexible forming processes. Among the upcoming flexible forming techniques, one that has captured a lot of interest is Single Point Incremental Forming (SPIF), where a flat sheet is incrementally deformed into a desired shape by the action of a tool that follows a defined toolpath conforming to the final part geometry. Research on SPIF in the last ten years has focused on defining the limits of this process, understanding the deformation mechanics and material behavior and extending the process limits using various strategies. This paper captures the developments that have taken place over the last decade in academia and industry to highlight the current state of the art in this field. The use of different hardware platforms, forming mechanics, failure mechanism, estimation of forces, use of toolpath and tooling strategies, development of process planning tools, simulation of the process, aspects of sustainable manufacture and current and future applications are individually tracked to outline the current state of this process and provide a roadmap for future work on this process.
