Single-Port Laparoscopic Retroperitoneal Surgery Using a Modified Single-Port Device in Urology

Abstract: Objectives: To investigate the use of a flexible instrument platform in performing single-port laparoscopic retroperitoneal urologic surgeries and to verify the safety and feasibility of these surgeries. Methods: The homemade instrument platform consisted of two control loops and a powder-free surgical glove to form multichannels. 56 patients underwent this kind of single-port surgery for different urologic diseases, including radical nephrectomy in 31 patients, nephroureterectomy in 7 patients, partial nephre… Show more

“…According to the older literature, the upper size limit of lesions eligible for laparoscopy was 6 cm, while larger diameters constituted a relative contraindication to the procedure [3,4]. The indications gradually extended to larger lesions; therefore, it has quickly become the gold standard for the treatment of all benign adrenal tumors [5,6,7,8,9,10]. Although this procedure is considered relatively safe, outcomes vary depending on different factors; among them tumor size is frequently listed.…”

“…[ 8 ] Even though SPOR had been reported in radical nephrectomy and adrenalectomy,[ 2 , 11 ] SPOR-PN was only reported in two previous case reports; however, no clear description of the technique was stated. [ 13 , 14 ]…”

“…[ 10 , 11 ] The technique has been reported several times for adrenalectomies and radical nephrectomies;[ 11 - 14 ] however, only anecdotal case reports were found in the literature for PN. [ 13 , 14 ] In this article, we describe the techniques and outcomes of what, to our knowledge, represents the first SPOR-PN case series in Europe.…”

“…Concerning the anatomical adjacency relation of the splanchnic nerves with kidney, and that the operations on kidney and adrenal gland performed with retroperitoneal laparoscopy have been proved effective in the clinical practice, we supposed that the incision and surgical approach of retroperitoneal laparoscopic resection of adrenal tumor could be taken for reference (Shi et al, 2014).…”
