Singlemode-Multimode-Singlemode Optical Fiber Sensor for Accurate Blood Pressure Monitoring

Abstract: A dual-channel single-mode-multi-mode-singlemode (SMS) fiber optic sensor encapsulated by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was proposed for the first time, for the simultaneous monitoring of the brachial and radial arteries for accurate blood pressure prediction. With the help of the machine learning algorithm Support Vector Regression (SVR), the SMS fiber sensor can continuously and accurately monitor the systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Commercial sphygmomanometers are used to calibrate the accuracy of bloo… Show more

“…Indeed, these measurands produce event-like (pulsed) signals that can be easily detected by FFSs with simple signal processing. Recently, the topic has been extended to other applications such as pulse wave velocity monitoring [123], blood pressure monitoring [124], and blood glucose sensing [92].…”

“…Notably, significant progress has been made in recent years with the development of various fiber optic pressure sensors. These sensors employ different principles, such as Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) [25,26], Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) [27,28], Multimode Interference (MMI) [29,30], and Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) [31,32]. This section primarily focuses on recent advancements in fiber optic FP pressure sensors utilizing thin film technology.…”

“…PDMS exhibits high structural flexibility owing to its low Young's modulus, which can solve the fragility defect of optical-fiber sensors. For example, an optical-fiber blood-pressure monitoring sensor based on a single-mode-multimode-single-mode structure encapsulated with PDMS to protect the fiber was proposed by Pang et al [27]. In addition, PDMS demonstrates good biocompatibility and chemical inertness; thus, it is often applied as a microfluidic channel [28][29][30][31].…”
