Sinonasal mucosal vasculature in yellow nail syndrome and chronic rhinosinusitis with or without polyps

Abstract: BackgroundLymphatic dysfunction is hypothesized to be an underlying factor in the pathophysiology of yellow nail syndrome (YNS) (yellow nails, lymphedema, pleural effusions, and frequently chronic rhinosinusitis [CRS]). It is unclear why some YNS patients develop CRS. We quantified lymphatic and total vasculature of sinonasal mucosa in YNS patients and compared it to controls from CRS patients with (CRSwNP) or without polyps (CRSsNP).MethodsImmunohistochemistry was performed on archival sinonasal mucosal sampl… Show more

“…Improved phenotyping and endotyping of patients with CRS has been an area of great recent interest. 8,9,39,48-50 Among a large disease umbrella (ie, CRS), phenotyping refers to classifying specific disease entities based upon clinical presentation while endotyping focuses on classifying by distinct mechanistic pathways. 51 To this end, biomarker discovery has emerged as a valuable component of CRS endotyping.…”
