Site location and crystal field ofNd3+ions in congruent strontium barium niobate

Abstract: The site location of Nd 3+ ions in congruent strontium barium niobate ͑Sr 0.6 Ba 0.4 Nb 2 O 6 ͒ has been systematically investigated by means of low-temperature optical and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies. The experimental results obtained by these complementary techniques clearly indicate that Nd 3+ ions are mainly located in only one of the four available cationic sites, the A2 sites, and preserving the C s local symmetry of these host cation sites. The energy levels and g-factor value experim… Show more

“…The experimental energy level values of Nd 3+ are obtained from the previous spectroscopic analysis. Then, the crystal-field and spin-orbit parameters from DV-Xα method and effective Hamiltonian method and other free-ion parameters from Ref [57] were used as the initial values to fit the experimental energy levels of Nd 3+ in GdTaO 4 , and LuTaO 4 with the f -shell fitting program, which is developed by M. F. Ried with the Fortran language [58]. The calculated results, experimental results and the difference between the calculated values and experimental values are shown in Table 9.…”

The calculated results, experiment results, and their difference are shown in Table 4.…”

“…In comparison with thermo-electric (TE) materials containing elements such as Cd, Tl, Se, Te, Sb, Bi, the TE-oxides of alkali, alkali earth, and transition elements are generally cheaper and more health and environmental friendly, and the abundance of their constituent elements on Earth's crust is orders of magnitude higher. Among them, strontium barium niobates, SrxBa1-xNb2O6 (SBN) are interesting because of their low thermal conductivity, which is related to structural features [1,2] Actually, SBNs have been investigated since long time not only as TE materials [4][5][6][7][8][9][10], but also for ferro-electricity [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] , dielectric properties [20][21][22][23], photocatalysis [24,25], and photorefractive, electro-optic, nonlinear optic, and fluorescence properties [26][27][28][29][30][31][32]. The structural aspects and their relation with the functional properties have been comprehensively discussed by Zhu et al [18] using a crystal-chemical model for the whole family of tetragonal bronzes.…”
