Abstract: This article reflects on the focus group as a research technique used in an analysis of the relationship between learning spaces and pedagogy, developed as part of the assessment of the secondary school modernisation programme in Portugal. While open conversation enabled the elicitation of collaborative ideas between stakeholder groups, writing wishes down enabled expressing oneself without the pressure or anxiety of voicing one’s views in front of others (Duarte et al, 2015 ).
