Situated conceptualization offers a theoretical account of social priming

Abstract: The theory of situated conceptualization is introduced, including its core assumptions about the construction and storage of situated conceptualizations, the production of pattern completion inferences in relevant situations, and the implementation of these inferences via multimodal simulation. The broad applicability of the theory to many phenomena is reviewed, as is its ability to explain individual differences. The theory is then applied to social priming, showing that the theory provides a natural account … Show more

“…Another advantage of developing situated interventions is that they are likely to elicit longerterm behavior change via the gradual formation of new situated conceptualizations, which could elicit new (favorable) habitual behaviors (Barsalou 2016b). The potential for the formation of new habits presents a significant advantage compared to intention-based interventions as, unlike intentions, habitual behaviors are resistant to the effects of time pressure, low self-control, and distraction (e.g.…”

“…Here, we introduce a situated cognition perspective to further refine our understanding of habitual behavior and derive implications for consumer habit-change interventions (see also information about time and space, and representations of the objects and people present Barsalou 2016aBarsalou 2016bBarsalou 2003;Papies and Barsalou 2015).…”

“…It is sometimes argued that a detailed description for replicating an original result might be impossible in some domains (such claims have been made about areas such as social psychology or infant research; Barsalou, 2016;Coyne, 2016), where the combination of contextual factors and expertise that is needed to produce a specific effect is complex, and perhaps even unknowable. If these sorts of claims are true, however, then this would raise serious doubts about the validity, informational value, and contribution to a cumulative body of knowledge of the original study.…”

“…Whereas most researchers agree that priming operates by making a mental construct accessible (e.g., Loersch and Payne, 2011; Schröder and Thagard, 2013; Fujita and Trope, 2014; Klatzky and Creswell, 2014; Stroebe and Strack, 2014; Wentura and Rothermund, 2014; Barsalou, 2016), it remains debatable how and when exactly this accessibility should influence behavior. There are generally two different types of theories regarding the prime-behavior link (see Fujita and Trope, 2014).…”
