Situating evaluation in scenarios of use

Abstract: We report on the use of scenario-based methods for evaluating collaborative systems. We describe the method, the case study where it was applied, and provide results of its efficacy in the field. The results suggest that scenariobased evaluation is effective in helping to focus evaluation efforts and in identifying the range of technical, human, organizational, and other contextual factors that impact system success. The method also helps identify specific actions such as prescriptions for design to enhance sy… Show more

“…In [37], the authors discuss that it is possible to integrate usability inspection techniques with work scenarios, jointly constructed by domain experts, and that these techniques may lead to results comparable to the ones obtained from field studies. We based our evaluation method in the combination of the inspection technique with the scenario based approach [38][39][40].…”

“…An important advantage of scenario-based design is that it can invoke the users' on-site feelings and they can easily identify what is suitable for them. Scenario-based design has been well employed in system development for varied purposes, such as evaluation, design, and communication (e.g., Weidenhaupt et al, 1998;Haynes et al, 2004). With scenario-based design, designers and researchers can perform an analysis concerning the claims made for a particular design and the associated trade-offs.…”

“…The literature on usability evaluation discusses a variety of design products that may be evaluated early, such as prototypes [39], scenarios [14], storyboards [17], and interface specifications [24]. Among these, use cases and scenarios are two prominent approaches with several desirable characteristics.…”

“…Scenario-based evaluation was investigated by Haynes et al [14] in relation to CSCW, where it helped identify factors that impacted the system's chance of success. A number of authors propose techniques to assess the quality of use cases.…”
