Six new species of Zingiber (Zingiberaceae) from Borneo

Abstract: Six new species of the genus Zingiber from Borneo are presented. Z viridiflavum was collected in primary lowland forest, while Z chlorobracteatum was collected in hilly secondary forest. Both are characterized by their slender fusiform inflorescences with yellow‐green bracts. Z. flagelliforme found in primary lowland forest displays a peculiar reproduction habit in its tapering leafy shoots which bend over to trail on the ground where plantlets produced in the leaf‐axis take root. “…(Zingiberaceae) was described by Miller in 1754 and subsequently explored by various workers (Roxburgh , Fischer ). Zingiber is represented by 141 species and distributed throughout tropical Asia including China, Japan and tropical Australia (Theilade , Theilade and Mood , Larsen and Larsen , Chaveerach et al ). Of these, 20 species are reported from India (Sabu et al , , Sujanpal and Sasidharan , Kishor and Leong‐Skornickova , Kumar et al , Thongam et al , Thongam and Konsam ), while only 7 species including the one described herein occur in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.…”
