Size Reduction Characteristics of Yellow Poplar in a Laboratory Knife Mill

Abstract: Size reduction is one of the major pre-processing operations in using biomass as a source of energy or raw materials for forest products industry. The grinding characteristics of dried yellow poplar wood chips were investigated using laboratory knife mill with three different screen aperture diameters to provide the basic information for the optimizing of size reduction processes in biomass industry. Average specific energy consumptions were 0.157, 0.137, and 0.093 Wh/g for the screen aperture diameters of 5.0… Show more

“…The anatomical properties of domestic yellow poplar has been studied (Lee and Eom, 2011;Lee, 2016). Kang et al (2011) measured gas permeability in order to investigate the relationship between the sound absorption characteristics, permeability and pore structure of the cross-section of domestic Yellow poplar.…”

“…The quality of the grinding product is most often determined by the grinding degree, which is defined as the ratio of the characteristic dimensions of the particles before and after size reduction [19,20]. Other indicators, e.g., bulk density, grain size distribution, specific surface area, energy value, and their relationship with the comminution process, are also important from the point of view of the final product quality [4,[21][22][23][24]. Previous studies conducted by other researchers have shown that the reduction of biomass particles' sizes result in improved flowability and movement properties; the material moves better, e.g., on feeders [25].…”
