Skateboarding Injuries in Spain: A Web-Based Survey Approach

Abstract: Background: The inclusion of skateboarding in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games reinforces this activity as a sport. As the number of skateboarders around the world and the difficulty of skateboarding maneuvers continue to increase, the number of skateboarding injuries may also rise. Thus, there is a need for more comprehensive investigations into the practice habits and injuries of skateboarders. Purpose: To describe the sports habits and skateboarding injuries of a sample of skateboarders in Spain. Study Design: … Show more

“…It is unknown what motivated participants to respond to the survey, but a potential reason could be a history of injuries. 11,32 For this reason, there may have been a selection bias. The medical diagnosis of injury was unknown, so results must be taken with caution.…”

“…However, skateboarding maneuvers often require feet positions at high risk for ankle injuries, and the risk is even more heightened by the fact that at a peak velocity of 40 mph [20] and without any mechanical braking system in the skateboard [21], the potential force of impact in skateboarding is the greatest among all sport activities, and this creates a risk of acute and chronic injuries. Previous skateboarding studies have emphasized the description of skateboarding maneuver postures, the mechanical designs of skateboards, injury epidemiology [20,22,23], skateboarding environment, and skateboarding ecology-namely, its effects on individuals and society [24,25], but few studies have investigated skateboarders' feet by using standardized measurements. All test participants in the present study had sustained ankle injuries from skateboarding akin to those sustained by snowboarders, gymnasts, and ballet dancers in their respective sports [26].…”

“…As for the current scientific research available related to sports injuries epidemiology and patterns in adolescents, the number of studies available is limited in the case of Spain. Moreover, most of them focused on specific sports (soccer, basketball, skateboarding, martial arts, padel), adult population, or recreational sports [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ]. There is only one recent study on sports injuries in adolescents.…”
