Skills shortages and training: a forgotten dimension in new technology

Abstract: Skills shortages and training problems are forgotten by many companies when they adopt new technology. 52 engineering firms in a ‘traditional’ industry in a single local labour market were interviewed to examine their attitudes to new technology and the skills and training implications of technology adoption. Skills and training issues were often forgotten or misjudged during the new technology appraisal process. It was these same areas which created most problems for many companies after adoption. Misjudgemen… Show more

“…Image subtraction was accomplished using Py-ZOGY (Guevel & Hosseinzadeh 2017), an implementation in Python of the subtraction algorithm described by Zackay et al (2016). In addition, SN 2017cfd was observed by the Foundation Supernova Survey in the g, r, i, and z filters for 6 epochs and published by Foley et al (2018); we include these data in our light-curve analysis.…”

“…Although some Foundation data were discovered by targeted searches, untargeted surveys would likely have reported many of these targeted events if targeted surveys with greater depth or higher cadence (e.g., DLT40; Tartaglia et al 2018) had not discovered them first . Untargeted surveys independently discovered 94% of the Foley et al (2018) sample.…”

“…Foundation aims to compile a sample of up to 800 SNe Ia observed in griz over the next several years. The Foundation Data Release 1 (DR1) includes 180 SNe Ia that pass the Foley et al (2018) sample criteria for inclusion in a cosmological analysis, approximately equal to the number of published, cosmologically useful SNe Ia from all previous low-z samples combined (Betoule et al 2014; J18; S18). The Dark Energy Survey cosmological analysis (DES Collaboration et al 2018), for example, uses just 122 low-z SNe Ia.…”

“…Mipatzon of staff -Previous empirical analysis (Berthoud 1980;Foley et al, 1994) suggests that management and professional groups are five times as likely to migrate forjob reasons as manual workers. This suggests that employees at the higher levels of the workforce hierarchy, such as those recruited at Stages 1 or 2 are more likely to be drawn from a wider geographical area than production workers on the shop floor.…”
