Skin and Toe Resistance Mobilisation of Pile During Laboratory Static Load Test

Abstract: This article shows the mathematical method to determine the lateral stress on the shaft and toe resistance of pile using the new approach. The method was originally invented by Meyer and Kowalow for the static load test. The approximation curve was used for the estimation of both settlement curve and toe resistance curve of the pile. The load applied at the head of the pile is balanced by the sum of two components: the resistance under the toe of the pile and the skin friction. Therefore, the settlement curve … Show more

“…The course of this function depends, among other things, on: the geometry of the pile, the ground conditions, and the way resistance is formed with pile settlement. The points obtained from the test can be approximated by the curve that was proposed by Meyer and Kowalow in the form of Equation ( 1 ) presented in [ 66 , 83 , 84 ]. where: —settlement of the head of the pile, mm; —settlement constant, mm/kN;…”

“…When piles are loaded to their ultimate capacity, the phenomenon of soil displacement to the surface that accompanies the loading of direct foundations is not observed. The ratio of the pile penetration ( H ) in the ground to its diameter ( D ) should be greater than 2.5 [ 66 ], but it is recommended that ≥ 10. Taking the above technological and geometrical requirements into account, it was planned to execute piles with a drill with a diameter of 40 mm and a minimum soil penetration of 400 mm.…”

“…The axial load has been applied and settlement has been measured. Firstly the load-settlement relationship was approximated using Meyer-Kowalow method widely described in [15][16][17]. During approximating the following relationship was obtained ( 18), (19).…”
