Skin Coverage of the Middle-Distal Segment of the Leg With a Pedicled Perforator Flap

Abstract: On the basis of these results, it is concluded that perforating flaps are a good choice of treatment for skin losses, especially in the distal segment of the leg, and could be an alternative option for the use of free microsurgical flaps.

“…A total of 1,802 references of free flap were identified and we included 36 studies that discussed 1,226 free flaps used to treat 1,226 patients (Table ). For the pedicled‐propeller flap, a total of 616 references was identified and we included 19 studies . The 19 articles selected discussed 302 pedicled‐propeller flaps performed in 302 patients (Table ).…”

“…In addition to the distal leg and foot coverage, perforator flaps have been increasingly used in the coverage of mid-and proximal defects of the leg, for which local muscle flaps or free flaps were once used (9,12,15). In 1 patient, we used both a posterior tibial artery perforator flap and a peroneal artery posterior perforator adipose flap to cover a large mid-tibial defect, because no healthy recipient vessels were available for free tissue transfer (Fig.…”
