Skin fluorescence controlled photodynamic photorejuvenation (wrinkle reduction)

Abstract: The present study shows that statistically significant improvements in wrinkle reduction and skin texture, equivalent to previously reported results obtained with 20% ALA, can be obtained with 0.5% liposome encapsulated 5-ALA. Only minor and infrequent side effects were registered at the 0.5% 5-ALA treated areas. Skin fluorescence monitoring during pre-treatrnent with 5-ALA may improve clinical efficacy, reduce time consumption and increase safety of the treatment.

“…Accumulation of PpIX in test areas was determined by fluorescence intensity measurements using a handheld photometer (FluoDerm, Dia Medico Aps, Gentofte, Denmark) [25,26]. The photometer excites a 12.6 cm 2 area with 385-415 nm blue light and detects average fluorescence intensity over the entire skin area at 610-720 nm emission.…”

“…The level of skin fluorescence after 1 h spraying with this new 0.5% 5-ALA liposomal spray has been indeed shown to be identical to that obtained after 30 min application of 20% 5-ALA in a cream base (6). Clinically, liposome-encapsulated 0.5% 5-ALA has been shown to induce a statistically significant improvement in wrinkle reduction and skin texture, which was equivalent to that obtained with 20% ALA although with fewer side effects (20). In our study, an overall improvement of at least one class of the MFWS was observed in 100% of participants for periorbital wrinkles and in 90% for nasolabial wrinkles.…”

“…In the current study, liposome‐encapsulated 5‐ALA was delivered in spray form into the epidermis. Skin fluorescence 1 hour after multiple spraying with 0.5% liposome‐encapsulated 5‐ALA was comparable with that 30 minutes after the application of 20% 5‐ALA in a cream base 14 . A similar level of skin fluorescence enables a reduction in the concentration of topical 5‐ALA to 0.5%, whereas there is low post‐treatment photosensitivity, and the fluorescence level begins to decrease 15 minutes after the cessation of spraying 15 .…”

“…In the present study, treatment that combined liposome‐encapsulated 5‐ALA at a low concentration of 0.5% and IPL emitting wavelengths from 400 to 720 nm showed promising results for improving facial inflammatory acne in Asians. This treatment method obviates the need for occlusion during 5‐ALA incubation and reduces the adverse effects of PDT 14 …”
