Summary Three different methods were used to measure the cell‐mediated immune response of cattle to PIV‐3, namely leucocyte migration inhibition in agar gel, lymphocyte stimulation, and skin hypersensitivity. None of the values obtained seem to correlate quantitatively with the hemagglutination‐inhibition titers in serum. The leucocyte migration‐inhibition test appears to discriminate between two strains of PIV‐3, which differ with regard to the degree of neuraminidase activity. Zusammenfassung Zellvermittelte Immunität gegenüber Parainfluenza‐3 Virus (PIV‐3) beim Rind; Ergebnisse von in vivo und in vitro Tests Drei verschiedene Methoden wurden angewendet, um die zellvermittelte Immunreaktion bei Rindern auf PIV‐3 zu messen, nämlich die Hemmung der Leukozytenwanderung im Agar‐gel, Lymphozytenstimulierung und Hauthypersensibilität. Keines von den gefundenen Resultaten scheint quantitativ in Wechselbeziehung mit den Titern der Hämagglutinations‐Hemmung im Serum zu stehen. Die Untersuchung der Hemmung der Leukozyten‐Wanderung scheint zwischen zwei Stämmen von PIV‐3 zu unterscheiden, die in Hinsicht auf die Stärke der Neuraminidase‐Aktivität voneinander abweichen. Résumé Immunité cellulaire contre le virus Parainfluenza‐3 (PIV‐3) chez le bovin: résultats de tests in vivo et in vitro On a utilisé trois méthodes pour mesurer la réaction immunilogique cellulaire avec PIV‐3 chez des bovins: inhibition de la migration leucocytaire en gélose d'agar, stimulation des lymphocytes et hypersensibilité cutanée. Aucun des résultats trouvés ne peut se comparer quantitativement avec les titres sérologiques de l'inhibition de l'hémagglutination. La recherches de l'inhibition de la migration leucocytaire semble être différente entre deux souches PIV‐3 qui divergent du point de vue de l'intensité de l'activité de la neuraminidase. Resumen Inmunidad de intercesión celular frente a virus parainfluenza‐3 (PIV‐3) en vacunos; resultados de pruebas in vivo e in vitro Se recurrió a tres métodos diferentes para medir la reacción inmunológica de intercesión celular frente a PIV‐3 en vacunos, a saber, inhibición de la migración leucocitaria en gelosa de agar, estimulación linfocítica e hipersensibilidad cutánea. Ninguno de los resultados hallados parece estar en correlación cuantitativa con los títulos de inhibición de la hemoaglutinación en el suero sanguíneo. El estudio de la inhibición de migración leucocitaria parece diferenciar entre dos cepas de PIV‐3, las cuales difieren entre sí con respecto a la intensidad de actividad neuraminidásica.

Summary Ten mares naturally infected with equid herpesvirus 1 (EHV‐1) were intradermally injected with an antigen prepared from livers of EHV‐1 infected hamsters. All mares showed strong cutaneous reactions. The reactions at the site of injection of the control antigen were very small. In non‐infected mares the reactions to both the EHV‐1 antigen and the control antigen were very slight. It is suggested that the cutaneous reactions in EHV‐1 infected mares are of the delayed type hypersensitivity. Zusammenfassung Über eine Hautüberempfindlihkeit beim Pferd gegenüber Equinem Herpesvirus 1 Zehn Stuten, die eine natürlich vorkommende Infection mit Rhinopneumonitisvirus (EHV‐1) durchgemacht hatten, würde intradermal Hamsterleberverreibung von Rhinopneumonitis‐infizierten Hamstern verabfolgt. Alle Stuten zeigten starke Hautreaktionen, Reaktionen an den Stellen, an denen Kontrollantigen gespitzt worden war, waren dagegen sehr schwach ausgeprägt. Nicht infizierte Stuten reagierten sowohl auf die Applikation von EHV‐1‐Antigen als auch auf die von Kontrollantigen nur sehr schwach. Aus diesen Ergebnissen wird der Schluß gezogen, daß die idealen Hautreaktionen bei Stuten, die eine EHV‐1‐Infektion überstanden hatten, vom Typ der sog. delayed type hypersensitivity sind.
