Skin-identical Lipids Versus Petrolatum in the Treatment of Tape-stripped and Detergent-perturbed Human Skin

Abstract: The cutaneous permeability barrier is localized to the stratum corneum interstices and is mediated by lamellar bilayers enriched in cholesterol, free fatty acids and ceramides. Topically applied lipids may interfere with the skin barrier function and formulations containing "skin-identical lipids" have been suggested to facilitate normalization of damaged skin. The aim of the present study was to compare the ability of "skin-identical lipids" in a petrolatum-rich cream base and pure petrolatum to facilitate ba… Show more

“…Although more comparative clinical trials are needed, several studies suggest that pure petrolatum and lipid-containing creams are equally effective in repairing the skin barrier after experimental perturbation and in the setting of chronic dermatitis. 8, 9 Emollients rich in ceramides have also been shown to be effective in blocking TEWL and improving clinical disease scores. 10 …”

“…These studies were mostly conducted on detergent- or tape-stripped-perturbed human skin and/or hairless mouse skin [14,113] or on skin with diet-induced AD-like symptoms in animal models [114,115]. The skin barrier function is commonly measured by the TEWL value which is a marker for the inside-outside barrier.…”

“…Petrolatum was incorporated in the pharmaceutical and skincare industry firstly as a vehicle and nowadays as an effective moisturizer ingredient. This mixture of hydrocarbons creates an oily barrier over the skin surface, reducing TEWL both in healthy [98] and irritated human skin [99,100]. Due to its occlusive properties, petrolatum derivatives can retain water, consequently restoring the skin barrier.…”
