Skin Preservation in the Debridement of Necrotizing Fasciitis: A Demonstrative Case Report

Abstract: Summary: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare yet potentially fatal soft-tissue, polymicrobial infection. Aggressive debridement of the fascia and overlying skin as well as antimicrobial coverage constitute the mainstay of management, often leaving large skin defects. However, we demonstrate in this paper a case of a young woman who developed NF after liposuction and was treated by fascial debridement with minimal skin excision. Skin preservation will reduce the morbidity and improve the final aesthetic outcom… Show more

“…13 The preferred treatment for necrotizing fasciitis is rapid debridement and the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics. AlMarshad et al 14 and Dhawan et al 15 suggest that hyperbaric oxygen therapy and low-dose radiation therapy are effective adjunctive treatments for necrotizing fasciitis through inhibiting the growth of anaerobic bacteria, accelerating the healing process and enhancing immune response. However, even with prompt and adequate treatment, patients with necrotizing fasciitis still face a high risk of limb amputation and multiple organ dysfunction leading to death.…”
