Skin-to-skin contact between mothers and full-term newborns after birth: a cross-sectional study

Abstract: Objective: to analyze skin-to-skin contact practice in full-term newborns after birth. Method: a cross-sectional study carried out in São Paulo-SP with 78 mother-child binomials. Data were obtained from medical records and by non-participant observation. Maternal, neonatal and care conditions, length of skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding attachment were analyzed. “…Although most women experienced SSC immediately after birth, it is worth highlighting the early interruption and late return, with no record of maternal complications and few neonatal complications that would contraindicate this practice. This reduced duration was evidenced in another investigation, in which 73% of dyads were separated before 60 minutes (13) .…”

“…The practice is widely recommended, especially when one has a normal birth without complications and the neonate has good fetal vitality ( 13 ) . The research data show that the dyads were considered to be at usual risk, without complications in labor/birth that were responsible for the separation during the golden hour, thus favorable to the execution of SSC.…”

“…Within the elements of care and as an early stimulus is the kangaroo position, with positive scientific evidence for the mother and the newborn (23) such as better thermal regulation and physiological stability of the child, promotion of breastfeeding (BF), with expansion of milk production and its duration, positive stimulus to neurobehavioral development and effects on pain conditions (23)(24)(25)(26) .…”
