Skin Toxicity in Early Breast Cancer Patients Treated with Field-In-Field Breast Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy versus Helical Inverse Breast Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy: Results of a Phase III Randomised Controlled Trial

Abstract: Aims: Skin toxicity is a common adverse effect of breast radiotherapy. We investigated whether inverse-planned intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) would reduce the incidence of skin toxicity compared with forward field-in-field breast IMRT (FiF-IMRT) in early stage breast cancer. Materials and methods: This phase III randomised controlled trial compared whole-breast irradiation with either FiF-IMRT or helical tomotherapy IMRT (HT-IMRT), with skin toxicity as the primary end point. Patients received 50 Gy i… Show more

“…In another study, higher age was significantly associated with breast fibrosis ( Table 5 ) [ 23 ]. The other 7 out of 10 studies investigating the association between late radiation toxicity and age found no significant association ( Table 3 ) [ 21 , 26 , 29 , 32 , 34 , 35 , 39 ].…”

“…A total of 85 articles were further excluded for the following reasons: review or meta-analysis, small sample study, risk factors that are rarely studied, conference abstracts, non-intended endings, study being repeated on the same population, and lack of available data. Finally, 38 studies were included in this meta-analysis, of which five studies were RCTs, nine studies were retrospective designs, and 24 studies were prospective design ( 10 12 , 14 17 , 23 53 ). Except for one study from the WanFang database ( 40 ), all other included studies were indexed in PubMed.…”

“…Some authors have also evaluated various IMRT techniques, particularly Tomotherapy [ 18 , 19 , 20 ]. Lee et al [ 19 ] evaluated 216 breast cancer patients treated by either IMRT or Tomotherapy with an integrated boost regimen (50.4 Gy/60.2 Gy) with a median follow-up of 5 years.…”
