Skull base cerebrospinal fluid fistula: a novel detection method based on two‐dimensional electrophoresis

Abstract: Background. The detection of the presence of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in nasal secretions contaminated with blood and mucus remains a challenging clinical problem.Methods. A prospective study was conducted from November 1998 to February 2002, including 42 patients. Samples (250 AL) of nasal secretions were analyzed by two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE). Plasma, mucus, and CSF were identified by specific proteins markers corresponding to characteristic trains of spots. Intrathecal injection of fluorescein … Show more

“…Several noninvasive methods have been proposed for detecting CSF leakage, including testing suspect fluids with reagent sticks used for measuring glucose concentration, 32 the β-2 transferrin test, 33 and the β-trace protein test. 34 As a precaution, sanguineous discharge from the left nostril of the horse described in the present report was tested with a glucose reagent stick. Results were inconclusive, but whether this was because only a small quantity of nasal fluid was available for testing or because of heavy contamination with blood and mucus could not be determined.…”

“…Immunologic methods: Immunologic methods differentiate between proteins in CSF and those in nasopharyngeal secretions 31,32 . Irjala and collegues have described the use of an immunofixation technique for the identification of microaliquots (100 μL) of CSF by demonstrating two electrophoretically characteristic bands of transferrin 33 .…”

“…Средний возраст больных СНЛ, по данным авторов [3], составляет 49,6 года, а индекс массы тела -35,9 кг/м 2 . СНЛ встречается чаще у женщин среднего возраста (81%), страдающих ожирением (94%) [4]. Соотношение мужчин и женщин среди больных СНЛ составляет, по разным данным [3], от 1:1 до 1:2,6.…”
