Slag Formation During Reduction of Iron Oxide Using Hydrogen Plasma Smelting Reduction

Abstract: Replacing carbon by hydrogen is a huge step towards reducing CO2 emissions in the iron- and steel-making industry. The reduction of iron oxides using hydrogen plasma smelting reduction as an alternative to conventional steel-making routes has been studied at Montanuniversitaet Leoben, Austria. The aim of this work was to study the slag formation during the reduction process and the reduction behaviour of iron oxides. Furthermore, the reduction behaviour of iron ore during continuous feeding was assessed. Mixtu… Show more

“…The latter variant can be also referred to as plasma-enhanced hydrogen-based direct reduction. 237,256,507,508 The high reductive effect of the plasma in both cases, solidstate and liquid-state reduction, might result not only from the multiple dissociated and exited states into which hydrogen is brought but also from the small size, the high temperature and the entry speed of the exited species.…”

“…The thermodynamic principles and the basic operation of the HPSR process have been explained several times in multiple previous works [11][12][13][14][15][16]. Therefore, only the most important aspects are mentioned in the present work.…”
